GILBERT WILLIAM COLLETT

by H. R. Holmes, F.R.P.S.L.

GILBERT WILLIAM COLLETT, who died on July 24th, 1964, at the age of 76, was the last of that coterie of English philatelists, the others being the Rev. C. S. Morton, W. Buckland Edwards, and L. C. C. Nicholson, who along with three Jamaican philatelists produced Jamaica. Its Postal History, Postage Stamps, and Postmarks. This book, which was published in 1928, is in many respects the ideal for a work of this kind, and although written so long ago it remains the standard work. Gilbert Collett formed a notable collection of the stamps of this country, and his quality as a philatelist is reflected in the magnificent lot he gathered together. Although the stamps of Jamaica were his favourite philatelic interest, they did not claim his sole attention and his other collections were quite extensive.

He was elected to the Royal Philatelic Society in 1927, and on many occasions showed some of his stamps at its meetings. For ten years he was Assistant Honorary Secretary to the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain (1930-40), and in 1932 he also shouldered the duties of Honorary Treasurer of that body, retaining the position until 1959. Congress recognised his services by electing him an Honorary Life Member on his retirement. In 1952 he had signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists.

In addition to his philatelic interests, he was also a distinguished botanist, and for sixteen years was the Honorary Treasurer of the Natural History Section of the Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Society. After retiring from business to live in Chippenham he made a profound study of the local flora, collaborating in the publication of The Flora of Wiltshire, in 1957.
