| The following 22 lots comprise a correspondence of some eighty letters from Jamaica written between 1804 and 1828. The writer was a clerk in the victualling office, Jamaica. and the correspondence is to his brother who apparently left Jamaica about 1800 to join the Methodist Ministry in England. The brothers inherited an estate in Jamaica and much of the correspondence relates to prices of commodities and payments to the brother in England, who suffered from ill-health and an ever-increasing family, so that he resigned from the Ministry. He tried top trade with Jamaica by sending stocks of boots (their poor quality resulted in small sales) and candles (which melted and stuck together). | ||||
| The correspondence sheds light on the difficulties in opening churches and the fact that one was liable to imprisonment for preaching. The emancipation of slaves and their market value is discussed. | ||||
| The types quoted are those given by Thomas Foster. There are several varieties of type 4 which are unlisted; there were at least two instruments, one with a broad M, the other with a tall narrow M. There are two examples of the rare ‘PAID TO ENGLAND’, both later than those recorded by Foster. The ‘JAMAICA. / F’ struck at Falmouth in green, was an indication that this letter hid been Posted ‘Too Late’ for the mail. | ||||
