Mr. Everard Aguilar dies -- Sea-burial today

Mr Everard Aguilar, Jamaica's leading philatelist, died early yesterday morning, at his home at Wilmington Drive, Jacks Hill, St Andrew. He was 53.

Mr. Aguilar took ill earlier this year and went abroad for treatment. His condition did not improve and he had been invalid at home for some time. The end came at a few minutes after mid- night.

A keen philatelist, Mr. Aguilar was recognized as an authority on Jamaican stamps. He published in 1949 a brochure, "The Phi1atelic Handbook of Jamaica," which was the definitive work on the subject, and he was also the editor and publisher of "The British West Indian Philatelist," another authoritative work.

His knowledge of philately was recognized by the Government and his advice was sought whenever new stamp issues were being put out by Jamaica.

Horticulturist.

Mr. Aguilar was also an enthusiast horticulturist, and was one of the foremost importers of flowering plants into the Island. He was treasurer of the Jamaica Botanical Society, and was the owner of "The Green Thumb," a leading florist shop in Kingston.

Third and youngest son of the late Mr. T. N Aguilar, financier. Everard Francis Aguilar was born in Kingston on March 14, 1913 He was educated at Calabar High, School.

During 1935 to 1938, he was engaged in real-estate and investment-mortgage business activities but, in more recent years he devoted himself almost entirely to philately and horticulture, which were for both business and hobby.

Mr. Aguilar was a frequent contributor to the GLEANER on the subject of philately. An article by him, "The Stamp Way to Knowledge," was published In this paper in September of last year; and he wrote on "The Value of Stamps" in December last.

In his younger years, Mr. Aguilar was also prominent as a sportsman He took a keen interest in shooting, and was also at one time a leading yachtsman and race-horse owner. Fishing and badminton were other sports in which he indulged.

Surviving him are his immediate family — wife Fay and two daughters' Frances (Mrs Michael Campbell) and Anne.

Other relatives who survive him are his two brothers Mr. Vincent Aguilar, JP; and Mr. Andrew H B Aguilar JP; both well-known members of the community and two sisters Mrs. Inez Cridland and Mrs. Enid Halliday, who lives in England.

Mr. Aguilar will be buried at sea tomorrow morning.

It is with deep regret that we record the passing of Mr. Everard F. Aguilar on August 16th. 1966, in Kingston, Jamaica. Mr. Aguilar joined our Circle in 1957 and was well known both as a professional - specialising in the stamps and postal history of Jamaica - and as a prolific writer on all aspects of Jamaican philately. For many years his house organ 'The British West Indian Philatelist' was an informative quarterly magazine: he also was author of 'The Philatelic Handbook of Jamaica' and co-author with our Founder of 'The Cayman Islands, Their Postal History, Postage Stamps and Postmarks' published in 1962 which is recognised as the standard reference work. Mr. Aguilar visited England many times with his wife and family and many members will recall his participating in the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain at Blackpool in 1961. I will always remember his visit to my former home at Ridgmont in June of that year when he not only recounted many interesting anecdotes about stamps but also surprised me by his profound horticultural knowledge - he being a well known rose grower in Jamaica. He was a man of great charm and geniality and will be missed by all those who shared his love of Jamaican stamps. Our sincere condolences are extended to his widow – Fay - and their two daughters.
