SECOND PROVISIONAL ISSUE - VARIETIES
The Second Provisional Issue was printed by the Government Printer, the reason for this change is unknown
but it is clear from postmark evidence that Second Issue postcards were in use as early as April 9 1877.
In contrast to the First Provisional Issue, the Second presents a plethora of printing varieties.
Six types were recognised by ED Bacon (1920s) and his notation is used here although the later work by
Swarbrick & Swetland (1997/98) is incorporated. The differences between the six types are related to:
• The borders with individual ornaments; inverted, sideways or incomplete;
• Varieties in the printed text, missing serifs, colons and the like.
• The colour, from white to shades of blue, and type of card used;
• The overall dimensions of the printed frame
• The size of the card
