              The all-in R.M.S Packet Steamer rate to the British Isles was increased from 6d per %oz to 11- per %oz
                from t• Aprill863.  Up until this date, and indeed for some time thereafter, the 1/- stamp was not
               particularly popular outside of Kingston and some of the other,larger Post Offices.  Consequently, tbe
              new 1/- rate was frequently pre-paid using multiples of the lower value stamps, such as 2 x 6d or, as in
                                           the examples below, other variations.
