JAMAICA
Land of Wood and Water
The October 1862 obliterator redistribution exercise did not go entirely to plan. Obliterator "A54"
seems to have been mislaid during the short journey from May Hill, leaving its intended recipient,
the post office at Mile Gully, permanently bereft of an obliterating instrument. A replacement "A54"
was ordered, but did not arrive until late 1865. In the meantime, the Post Master at Mile Gully
continued to use his dater to cancel the stamps on letters posted at his office.
