The 1860-62 period saw the closure of several post offices and the opening of two new offices at
Malvern and Newport. In order to retain the alphabetical integrity of the Jamaican obliterator
distribution, nineteen post offices were instructed to return their obliterator instruments to Kingston
during the last fortnight of October 1862. These instruments, together with those collected from two
recently closed offices, were then redistributed as necessary to ~lish the alphabetical order.
During the last two weeks of October 1862, therefore, nineteen offices were left without the use of an
obliterator. Whilst awaiting the arrival of the newly allocated replacements, these offices were
compelled to use their circular daters to cancel stamps, as shown in the examples below.
