General Staff & Headquarters Markings

The British Army had infantry units stationed in Jamaica until after the evacuation at Dunkirk in May/June
1940; after this time, Canadian units served in Jamaica, although British support units remained.

OHMS Cover from Command Headquarters



Mailed from Jamaica to Artists Rifles, Euston Road, London, this cover was sent free of postage and bears no
postal markings. The Artists Rifles was a volunteer regiment of the British Army, raised in 1859, and in World
War 11 it served as an officer training corps.

Ex. Sutcliffe collection


The cover bears an oval handstamp (GS3) reading "Command Headquarters/Jamaica" dated 3rd February
1940, this being the earliest recorded date of use.


GS3 EKD: 6 Fte 1940 LKD:


A second handstamp reading "Secret" was applied twice in purple ink. This marking was unrecorded by
Sutcliffe (2003). lt is unframed, measures 19 x 5mm, and is provisionally numbered GS3A.
