General Staff & Headquarters Markings

During World War 11 the allied forces in the Caribbean area were divided into northern and southern areas, with
the headquarters of the North Caribbean Area being in Jamaica.


1945 (6th September)

The front of the cover has a very clear strike of the boxed "Forces mail via Baltimore/and British overseas
aircraft" handstamp (PM4) - possibly the earliest recorded use.

Although lacking postmarks, the "HQ North Caribbean Area" handstamp (GS6) on the rear of the cover

indicates it was sent on 6 h September 1945. Normally a receiving mark, the word "Received" in the
handstamp has been struck out, and here it is used on outgoing mail. This is the only recorded example.
