General Staff & Headquarters Markings

The Provost-Marshal! was attached to the General Staff, and the Military Provost Staff Corps provided the staff
for military prisons, including one on Jamaica.

Incoming Airmail Cover from Paisley, Scotland, to the Detention Barrack, Jamaica


A cover sent from the UK by airmail on 4th November 1940 to Private Thos. Ashcroft serving in the British Army
in Aruba, Dutch West lndies. Censored by the British censor, and also in Curacao en route to Aruba.

The cover was redirected from Aruba (9th December) to Jamaica where the recipient was being detained in the
Military Prison at Up Park Camp, passing through Cross Roads P .0 . on 28th December. A clear strike of the
oval handstamp "Detention Barack/Jamaica" (GS7), dated Dec. 1940- this is probably the only recorded
example.
