World War 11 Army Censor Markings

A second type of Military Censor handstamp was introduced in 1942, and comprised a simple double ring
handstamp, which was made locally of rubber. lt is recorded with numbers between 1 and 16, but not all
numbers have been reported. The handstamp was used at the Army Base Post Office at Up Park Camp.

Airmail Cover from Up Park Camp to Hereford, UK


A cover sent by Private Thomas at Up Park Camp, to Hereford in the UK, franked at the two shillings and
twopence all-air Transatlantic airmail rate. The stamps are cancelled by double ring datestamps of Cross
Roads Post Office, dated 11 th May 1942.

The cover carries a neat strike of the AC4 Military Censor handstamp, with censorship number 12, struck in
purple ink.


This is the earliest recorded example of the AC4 handstamp with any number.
